Mao Zedong, born 26 December 1893 in the village of Shaoshan, Hunan, died September 9, 1976 in Beijing, was a Marxist-Leninist theorist, politician and revolutionary. He was chairman of the Chinese Communist Party 1943-1976 and proclaimed the People's Republic of China as an independent state in Tiananmen Square in Beijing October 1, 1949. He was the first president ("Chairman") from 1954 to 1959, but continued as chairman of the Communist Party to be the country's dictator until his death.
