Chubby Checker
Chubby Checker (Ernest Evans), born October 3, 1941 in Spring Gulley, South Carolina (grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American singer. Chubby Checker was discovered in the late 1950s, when he often sang and entertained customers in the shop he worked in. The local record company became aware of him, and in 1960 released "The Twist," a cover version of a song by Hank Ballard made two years earlier. The song went straight to number one on the U.S. Billboard chart and made the new dance "twist" popular. Also sequel "Pony Time" went up to the first place in the U.S., while it was the next single, "Let's Twist Again," which became his breakthrough in Europe. "The Twist" is the only song that went up to the top spot on the Billboard charts twice - it got there again in the middle of 1961.
