Juan Carlos I (English: John Charles I) born 5 January 1938, King of Spain from 1975 to 2014. On 22 November 1975, two days after General Francisco Franco's death, Juan Carlos was designated King according to the law of succession promulgated by Franco. In 1969, when Franco named Juan Carlos as the next head of state, no monarch had reigned in Spain for 38 years.
King Juan Carlos successfully oversaw the transition of Spain from dictatorship to parliamentary monarchy.
Juan Carlos married Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark on 14 May 1962. The couple have three children and eight grandchildren. Juan Carlos abdicated in june 2014
